![]() | Narrows "New Distances" CD/LP receiving great reviews!!! Mammothpress.com: "...Supergroups. A lot tends to be said whenever well-known musicians break away from their home-bands and collaborate with others and form so-called supergroups. Regardless of genre, fans either hate the idea or embrace it as a further projection of their favorite bands’ sound and experience. This collaboration between bands and members tends to be a more common occurrence in the hardcore and punk genres. There are too many to list; and into this category the band Narrows can be added. The band’s pedigree reads like an all-star team of hardcore: Dave Verellen (Botch, Roy), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls), Ryan Frederiksen (These Arms Are Snakes), Jodie Cox (Tropics), and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys, Quarantine). For the band’s debut full-length via Deathwish Inc., New Distances, each member has brought their own band’s sound into the mix and created a juggernaut of aggressive music. Upon initial listen to New Distances, there seems to be no clear agenda as to what the band sounds like. Is it hardcore? Is it punk? Is it post-Noise? Is it aggressive and heavy? The answer is a resounding yes on all accounts. Even though all members are spread out over the U.S. and overseas, New Distances is the sound of five guys locked together in a room breaking down any and all misconceptions of heavy music. This album is angry, introspective, calming, disturbing, and countless other emotions that seem to wash over with each and every listen. It’s as if all members have taken their individual experiences and emotions in life and bands and threw them in a blender with little abandon. It seems fitting that the album cover art is that of a hand right out of Grey’s Anatomy book superimposed on a road map transparency in front of a dark forest, because Narrows have clearly created a new blueprint of emotionally aggressive music to be followed in the hardcore genre. This band is a lot more than a “supergroup”. They are a powerhouse to be reckoned with. Narrows is a mighty Viking warrior and New Distances is the great sword they are wielding to conquer all. Fans of hardcore music will be talking about this record for a long time. Trust me on this...Rating: 9 out of 10..." SMNnews.com: "...When the folks at Deathwish Inc announced the signing of Narrows to their heralded roster last year, post-hardcore junkies let out a collective “fuck yes!” Featuring Dave Verellen (Botch), Ryan Frederickson (These Arms Are Snakes, Nineironspitfire), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls), Jodie Cox (Tropics), and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys), Narrows sounds exactly like they should. The guitars, while angular, pack punch bringing to mind bands like Shellac and Jesus Lizard but the parts owe more to the hardcore and metal informed racket of their prior projects. Cox and Fredericksen stack one dissonant riff on top of the other never letting up during the band’s full-length debut, New Distances. On tracks like "Newly Restored" and "A Restoration Effort," the band plows through the material with air-tight precision but enough looseness in certain spots revealing a "rockier" side to their style. Verellen's bark is as potent and venomous as his days in Botch but he's also introduced more clarity in his delivery which fits in nicely. The album opens with "Chambered: which encapsulates the strongest aspects of Narrows's attack in the span of a couple of minutes. From there on, New Distances doesn’t let up. The group proves throughout the album that they not only possess the technical skills to make their chaotic songs believable, they also know when to hold back and let parts breathe. That’s the kind of songwriting craft that many of the younger bands these musicians have helped influence lack. Hopefully Narrows overcome their geographical issues (members live spread out in the U.S. and the UK) and keep on creating post-hardcore this vital...8 out of 10"..." Sputnikmusic.com: "...Hardcore super group Narrows follows up their not amazing but promising self-titled 7” with New Distances. The band consists of guitarists Jodie Cox(Tropics), Ryan Frederiksen(These Arms Are Snakes/Nineironspitfire), drummer Sam Strothers (Quarantine/Makeout Boys), bassist Rob Moran(Some Girls/Unbroken), and vocalist Dave Verellen(Botch/Roy). If you’re looking for intensely heavy music with breakdowns and blast beats you won’t find it here. New Distances takes a very different and intelligent approach to hardcore...4 out of 5..."
